The Onesiphorus Effect

All of us have Bible heroes that we identify with in certain seasons of life.

Jesus set the standard but Abraham, Deborah, Moses, Joshua, Nehemiah, Mary, Peter, and countless others, offer historical demonstrations of faith in ways that encourage us all.

However, when I reflect specifically upon the refreshing REST offered at any one of our Oasis locations scattered around the world, I can’t help but think of a little-known character named Onesiphorus.

The way Onesiphorus and his household intentionally served, helped to shape the trajectory of one of the greatest characters in the New Testament.

Not much is known about Onesiphorus other than that he sought out Paul in Rome and interacted in a deep and meaningful way. We know he provided a “sacred face” of encouragement as Paul continued strengthening the churches and may have even provided a “sacred space” of safety for a weary and persecuted Paul.

But what stands out to me is the way that Paul felt in Onesiphorus’ presence:

“May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus… because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain.” 2 Timothy 1:16

Every leader entering one of our Oasis locations, regardless of their specific vocation, is carrying around some sort of “shame chain” and is in desperate need of refreshment.

Maybe it’s weariness and worry.

Maybe it’s doubt and depression.

Maybe it’s a lack of clarity in your calling.

We refresh, despite the chains. We have an opportunity to offer attentive hospitality and incarnational empathy in ways that don’t add to the links of a shame-filled existence, but help alleviate the burdens so many carry.

We love well, ask Spirit-led questions, offer our joy-filled presence, and empower others to fulfill their Kingdom calling. Our Oasis locations should be that glorious combination of sacred face and sacred space where others can experience rest and lead refreshed.

Without shame.

I have to believe that the refreshing REST Paul experienced in the presence of Onesiphorus, gave him strength to carry on. Thousands of years later, we continue to be the recipients of Paul’s renewed vigor, finding life-giving transformation in his writings and following his footsteps as he followed Christ.

Who’s to say that the guests sitting at our table, sleeping in our home, and vulnerably sharing their chains, won’t go on to transform the next generation for the glory of God? Would they ask God for mercy upon our household because of what they experienced in your presence?

I think the answer is a resounding YES!

The Onesiphorus Effect is still being felt today. And with our powerful ministry of retreat, encouragement, safety, and transformation, we will see God’s kingdom come and will be done for generations to come.
